Was Nosferatu brilliant or a letdown? Here's what 1.6 million reviews say

Feb 19, 2025

I really, really liked Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu. To me, the movie was a breathtaking metaphor for Jung’s integration of the shadow -- so much so that I actually teared up in the theater. But almost everyone I know? Not so much. In fact, a lot of my friends downright hated the movie.

Baffled by this extreme discrepancy in reactions, I did what any very normal person with access to a high-powered social insights tool like AltaVox would do: I analyzed the 1.6 million reviews Nosferatu has on Letterboxd -- Gen Z’s favorite place to dramatically profess love (or seething hatred) for new and old films alike.

General sentiment analysis for 2025 Nosferatu's reviews

Turns out, my opinion wasn’t as niche as I thought: 56% of reviews were on the positive side, with 35% of them being actually very positive, while only 14% were negative and just 3% were very negative

So… my friends are clearly in the 3%. Naturally, I dug deeper into their gloomy little corner of the internet to understand why they felt so strongly against it.

Key topics highlighted in “Very Negative” reviews

Our tool identified “Disappointment with Expectations” as the most frequently mentioned topic, with 60% of comments expressing frustration over it. And, well—shame on them, because by now, we all know that expectation breeds disappointment.

Other major criticisms included Poor Execution by the Director (60%), Boring and Unengaging Pacing (56%), Lack of Coherence (32%), and Criticism of Visuals and Direction (16%).

Now, you might be thinking, “Wait… why don’t these numbers add up to 100%?” That’s the beauty of AltaVox—our tool can detect multiple sentiments within a single review. Some people just really needed to vent about everything.

But what about the people who loved it?

Key topics highlighted in “Very Positive” reviews

Even among those who really liked Nosferatu (36% of reviews), there were still some complaints: 21% were uncomfortable with the film’s sexual themes and 15% found the pacing slow.

I get it. But what about my specific take? Did anyone else catch the Jungian shadow integration metaphor I was so obsessed with? The answer: No.

Out of 1.6 million reviews, not a single one mentioned it. I felt as lonely as a centuries-old Count locked away in his eerie castle. 😔

Speaking of Counts… can we talk about that mustache?

Apparently, one of the most heated topics about the movies was nothing less than Count Orlok’s facial hair! Most reactions weren’t exactly kind -- 48% criticized Count Orlok’s mustache, while 20% found it somewhat charming.

So there you have it. You may never need to analyze millions of film reviews to prove a point about a gothic horror movie, but if you work in marketing, making sense of massive amounts of data is part of your daily life.
