Ok, Anora won best picture. But Best Engagement will always go to Brazil

Mar 4, 2025

This year's Academy Awards ceremony was by far the most anticipated edition ever -- at least for Brazilian audiences.

Right in the middle of Carnaval, the country's most cathartic national holiday, Brazilians paused the celebrations to watch Walter Salles' film compete in three major categories: Best International Feature Film, Best Actress and Best Picture.

"I’m Still Here" took home the International Feature Film award but lost the other two to Sean Baker's "Anora". The trophies may have gone elsewhere, but the internet tells a different story.

Using our social insights tool AltaVox, we analyzed nearly 4,000 comments on a TikTok video from the official Oscars account, which simply listed the nominees for Best Picture. The results? BRAZIL!

Brazilian comments dominated the discussion, with: 🇧🇷 51% showing support for actress Fernanda Torres, 🏆 26.5% praising "I’m Still Here" and 🇧🇷 25.1% expressing pure national pride (at least when it comes to cinema).

The remaining comments criticized the Oscars and what many saw as an unfair outcome -- proving that the decision did not sit well with Brazilian audiences.

Even when analyzing comments that mention "Anora", Brazilians still stole the scene:

Of course, this is just a microcosm -- but it highlights the power of Brazilian online engagement. The Academy's official YouTube channel wisely disabled comments on all their videos, while Instagram left them open – and you can guess what happened there…
